Thanks to All About Symbian, I was saved from an unnecessary conspiracy-theory post about Hutch’s WAP proxy (which, incidentally, is from Jataayu). Bloglines has announced that they now use Skweezer to compress all posts read through Bloglines Mobile, thus saving time and money. I’ve tried hard to find a free and feature-rich RSS reader for my mobile, but Bloglines just raised the bar to the point that few come close.

Instead of Hutch, opt for Airtel in India, as their GPRS service is quite cheaper costing only around Rs 20-25 with no limits on downloading or surfing. It works for both prepaid and postpaid. Skweezer is a good option, but do try http://wmlproxy.google.com that can save you many bits and you also have an option of turning off images.
Good luck.
Thanks. I’ve heard that Airtel is cheaper for data, though nobody’s been able to tell me exactly how much cheaper. I currently pay Rs 99 per month for unlimited WAP (proxied HTTP) data, but that’s only because I’m an old (in telco churn terms) customer. Other people are charged Rs 49 and data rates on top.
Dont worry man, I will tell ya about it in much more detail.
Previously, Airtel GPRS was Rs 5/- per day, no extra activation charges, full access to WAP and HTML sites(provided you have got a web browser) and no restriction on any amount of data that you can surf/download.
Hence, the monthly rent for Airtel was only for Rs 150/- with full acess to internet and the speeds were 40 kbps upstream and 5 kbps downstream. This worked extremely well and many student not affording a broadband opted for this scheme.
But from last couple of months, Airtel hiked up the daily rent to almost Rs 15/- and now the rent has gone to almost Rs 450/- a month, if you are planning to use it exclusively for web surfing.
Note that this amount is reduced from your regular talktime. Not like other providers who have various restriction like !dea for example, which offers plans of Rs 99/- per month, only WAP sites or Rs 400/- all sites and no download limits. However, think it as an extra rent. !dea will cut your talktime and will take this rent too. Its apparently expensive, and I dont think that this scheme will do !dea any good, coz generally those people working have got a broadband connection(hopefully)
Now I give you a tip for taking Hutch for a ride.
Use the Google Proxy (http://wmlproxy.google.com) from your standard web browser and surf as many sites as you want. ( I am assuming that you have got no limits on downloading and have a computer connection with data cable.) . The advantage of this is that Hutch gets cheated as all HTML content is translated into WML, understood by WAP devices. Let Hutch learn a lesson for being expensive.
Actually, telcos in India need to know that they can be a revolution in providing knowledge access across common people, but then who cares…??!!
Regards.
Note – Your local rents and schemes may vary, but in general, the technique is the same.

Thanks for the detailed response. Using a third-party WML proxy seems a bit much, especially since Hutch provides you one anyway. Here’s a tip: check the ‘advanced settings’ of your WAP access point
